Secretary of Historic Roser Park Neighborhood Association
Kai Warren: I've lived in RP since 1981 and got involved with the association in the early 90's, after being encouraged by other board members who knew of my preservation interests. My original involvement was quite limited but in 1999 I was elected VP Within a few months the president quit and I reluctantly took over his responsibilities. However I didn't want to be president. I wanted a better title. Since our Neighborhood tree was the Royal Palm I decided to bequeath upon myself the title of Royal Palm King. It was a little silly but it injected a light hearted spirit of not taking myself too seriously.
During my tenure I used our 1992 Neighborhood Plan and remains of a $100,000 grant for guidance on what we, as a neighborhood, should do. We spent some of that money on the double antique lights that you see at various intersections in the neighborhood and directional street signs to our historic district. Our Neighborhood Plan also stated that when the City was going to fix our flooding problem they would do it by opening a new section of Booker Creek. So when we received a notice that they were going to add more culverts I campaigned for the open creek. That began a two year struggle that we were eventually successful at achieving.
I'm especially proud of being on the board lately. Never before has there been so many people involved in HRP. In the last 5 or 6 years there's been a great influx of intelligent and committed people working together to bring positive change and have fun doing it. We've matured and the rest of the city is taking notice. Who wouldn't want to be part of that!
